The transformation of the fleece

After the sorting, each batch is treated separately. The more significant the batch is, the more significant the output will be at each stage of process.

Washing:

it is carried out by successive baths; the wool is cleaned, degreased and removed from its vegetable impurities.

Drying:

this occurs in the open air or in a drier device. wool will have to obtain again a certain rate of dampness to prevent from awkward electrostatic phenomena in the following stages.

Carding or combing:

Carding or combing: These two techniques of preparation for obtaining a thread are adapted respectively to short fibres and to long fibres. The Alpaca, having long fibre, is generally worked in combed cycle. Some products, like blankets, requires carding for obtaining scraped weavings.

Spinning mill

spinning The fibre is brought there in "tablecloths" or "ribbons" resulting from the combing, or in bulk, carded. Divided, simply twisted or re-twisted according to its destinations, the thread winds around reels or cones or also becomes balls ready for knitting.

It will then need the skilful hands of various craftsmen, weavers, knitters, dressmakers etc before each breeder can propose in various shapes the result of the transformation of the fleeces mowed one or two years before.
